Safe places in today\u2019s world are scarce. We need a safety net. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Terrorism. Crime in our cities. Home invasions. Road rage. We\u2019re threatened on every side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But have you heard? \u201cThe name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runneth into it, and is safe\u201d (Proverbs 18:10). That\u2019s good information, don\u2019t you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When my children were young, feeling frightened by a television program, they wondered how God would protect us if we faced danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I couldn\u2019t say how<\/em>, but assuring\nthem he would<\/em> protect us, I related a\nfamiliar story about the Israelites caught between the Egyptian army and the\nRed Sea with no way out. Who would\u2019ve thought God could divide the waters,\nusing a strong east wind, for the Israelites to cross the sea on dry ground?\nAnd then the walls of water collapsed, drowning their enemies (see Exodus\n14:20-31).<\/p>\n\n\n\n My children thought it was a fantastic story and so do I. Relating it\nprobably did more for me than for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The threats already mentioned, along with wars being fought worldwide and\nfinancial instability and moral decline in our culture, cause uncertainty and\ndisillusionment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If I let myself think about these realities, using my young son\u2019s\nwords, it would \u201cscare my heart out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n But I know our sovereign Lord controls the universe and our lives. The Lord my rock, and\nmy fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my\nbuckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the\nLord, who is worthy to be praised:\nso shall I be saved from mine enemies\u201d (Psalm 18: 1-3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNow know I that the Lord\nsaveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving\nstrength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we\nwill remember the name of the Lord\nour God\u201d (Psalm 20:6-7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOur help is in the name of the Lord,\nwho made heaven and earth\u201d (Psalm 124:8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Note to self: the name of the Lord is my strong tower and safety net; when\nfeeling afraid, run to him!<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
