She flew away when the front door opened. Inside the flowers of my spring wreath, I found the beginnings of her nest.<\/p>\n
I realized our constant door activity was a risk to any eggs she\u2019d lay. So I acted quickly, taking my wreath down to force mamma to build her home elsewhere.<\/p>\n
A few days later, I spotted high on the river-birch branch inside our courtyard a newly built nest. I imagined her nesting, then caring for her babies, feeding and protecting them from harm\u2014spring storms and predators.<\/p>\n
As God\u2019s children, we need a safe shelter.<\/strong><\/h3>\nBecause life\u2019s storms and a predator (Satan) often put us in danger. Or maybe we wonder how to rest in the Lord and the best time to take flight and soar.<\/p>\n
We have assurance:<\/p>\n
\n- God covers us with His feathers.<\/li>\n
- The Father hides us in the shadow of His wings.<\/li>\n
- His faithful promises are our strong shelter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Look at Jesus\u2019 words in Matthew 23.<\/p>\n
\u201cO Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that\u00a0kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have\u00a0gathered\u00a0your children together\u00a0as a hen gathers her brood\u00a0under her wings, and\u00a0you were not willing!\u201d (Verses 37-38).<\/p>\n
Our redeemer wants to gather us under His wings\u2014if we are willing.<\/strong><\/h3>\nThese benefits follow.<\/p>\n
1) Refuge.<\/strong> Like the hen gathers her brood to protect them from harm, the Lord\u2019s wings provide protection and security during stormy seasons and the enemy\u2019s harmful intent.<\/p>\nUnder God\u2019s wings we find protection and security during stormy seasons and the enemy\u2019s harmful intent. <\/a><\/span>Click To Tweet<\/a><\/span>\nPsalm 91 describes our refuge.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe who dwells in\u00a0the shelter of the Most High will abide in\u00a0the shadow of the Almighty. I will say\u00a0to the\u00a0Lord, \u2018My\u00a0refuge and my\u00a0fortress, my God, in whom I\u00a0trust\u2019\u201d (verses 1-2).<\/p>\n
\u201cHe will\u00a0cover you with his pinions, and under his\u00a0wings you will\u00a0find refuge; his\u00a0faithfulness is\u00a0a shield and buckler\u201d (verse 4).<\/p>\n
My research uncovered an astounding and comforting discovery. Pinions make up the outer part of a bird’s wing, including the flight feathers (Google). Birds are unable to take flight while covering their babies. It simply is impossible.<\/p>\n
Dark and turbulent storms often hit close to home.<\/strong><\/h3>\nWe lose a loved one or a job, illness strikes, our child turns wayward, or our dreams go unfulfilled.<\/p>\n
Yet, the Lord never leaves us, never flies off during threatening times. And He never forsakes us. We remain secure under His wings.<\/p>\n
David knew this security in Psalm 57.<\/p>\n
\u201cBe merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul\u00a0takes refuge; in\u00a0the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by\u201d (verse 1).<\/p>\n
David prayed as he hid in a cave, fleeing from Saul, who wanted to kill him. The cave wasn’t his refuge, but the shadow of the Almighty’s wing.<\/p>\n
2) Rest. <\/strong>We often fail to take a break from the busyness that leads to burnout and depletes our soul of joy. Our weary bodies and hearts, our what-if\u2019s, and our anxious thoughts all contribute to this breaking point.<\/p>\n\u201cFor you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy\u201d (Psalm 63:7).<\/p>\n
Rest is an intentional position of the heart. Like the sound of morning birds chirping in the morning sun, our joy is found in the Son.<\/p>\nRest is an intentional position of the heart. <\/a><\/span>Click To Tweet<\/a><\/span>\nThe end result of resting under His wings? Joy!<\/p>\n
3) Renewal. <\/strong>Merriam-Webster defines it, \u201cto make (something) new, fresh, or strong again.\u201d<\/p>\nThe heavenly Father restores us and makes us strong. And after each renewing under His wings, we are ready to take flight and soar\u2014until the next renewing season.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut\u00a0they who wait for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings\u00a0like eagles\u201d (Isaiah 40:31a).<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s resolve to remain under His wings for refuge, rest, and renewal.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m nestled there now. Are you?<\/p>\n

3) Renewal. <\/strong>Merriam-Webster defines it, \u201cto make (something) new, fresh, or strong again.\u201d<\/p>\nThe heavenly Father restores us and makes us strong. And after each renewing under His wings, we are ready to take flight and soar\u2014until the next renewing season.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut\u00a0they who wait for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings\u00a0like eagles\u201d (Isaiah 40:31a).<\/p>\n
Let\u2019s resolve to remain under His wings for refuge, rest, and renewal.<\/p>\n

Psalm 91 describes our refuge.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe who dwells in\u00a0the shelter of the Most High will abide in\u00a0the shadow of the Almighty. I will say\u00a0to the\u00a0Lord, \u2018My\u00a0refuge and my\u00a0fortress, my God, in whom I\u00a0trust\u2019\u201d (verses 1-2).<\/p>\n
\u201cHe will\u00a0cover you with his pinions, and under his\u00a0wings you will\u00a0find refuge; his\u00a0faithfulness is\u00a0a shield and buckler\u201d (verse 4).<\/p>\n
My research uncovered an astounding and comforting discovery. Pinions make up the outer part of a bird’s wing, including the flight feathers (Google). Birds are unable to take flight while covering their babies. It simply is impossible.<\/p>\n
Dark and turbulent storms often hit close to home.<\/strong><\/h3>\nWe lose a loved one or a job, illness strikes, our child turns wayward, or our dreams go unfulfilled.<\/p>\n
Yet, the Lord never leaves us, never flies off during threatening times. And He never forsakes us. We remain secure under His wings.<\/p>\n
David knew this security in Psalm 57.<\/p>\n
\u201cBe merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul\u00a0takes refuge; in\u00a0the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by\u201d (verse 1).<\/p>\n
David prayed as he hid in a cave, fleeing from Saul, who wanted to kill him. The cave wasn’t his refuge, but the shadow of the Almighty’s wing.<\/p>\n
2) Rest. <\/strong>We often fail to take a break from the busyness that leads to burnout and depletes our soul of joy. Our weary bodies and hearts, our what-if\u2019s, and our anxious thoughts all contribute to this breaking point.<\/p>\n\u201cFor you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy\u201d (Psalm 63:7).<\/p>\n

And after each renewing under His wings, we are ready to take flight and soar\u2014until the next renewing season.<\/p>\n \u201cBut\u00a0they who wait for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings\u00a0like eagles\u201d (Isaiah 40:31a).<\/p>\n Let\u2019s resolve to remain under His wings for refuge, rest, and renewal.<\/p>\n I\u2019m nestled there now.
