Not yet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a conversation with the Lord about promises\nunfulfilled, I reminded him of a few things he hasn\u2019t done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot yet.\u201d I added this so he\u2019d know I still trusted him.\nUnexpectedly those two words satisfied my complaining heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When God makes a promise, it\u2019s a done deal. He will do it.\nIf it hasn\u2019t happened yet, that just means I\u2019m getting closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, there\u2019s also the possibility it won\u2019t happen in\nmy lifetime. But I can rest, assured it will happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hebrews Chapter 11 opens with this amazing definition of\nfaith. \u201cNow faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do\nnot see\u201d (v.1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verse two says, \u201cThis is what the ancients were commended\nfor.\u201d Next, the writer introduces the names of people whose stories we\nknow\u2014ordinary people God chose for a special role in his mighty plan: Abel,\nEnoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll these people were still living in faith when they died.\nThey did not receive the things promised, they only saw them and welcomed them\nfrom a distance\u2026\u201d (v. 13).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They belonged to a prestigious club, the \u201cNot Yet Club.\u201d Did\nI see your name on the membership roster?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being honest, I must admit this wasn\u2019t my first conversation\nwith the Lord about promises on hold. Once I questioned him about a promise I\u2019d\nrelied on and vented my frustration over his delay. He responded, \u201cI didn\u2019t say\nwhen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re wondering\u2026did he ever come through? Yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another time, I mentioned how long I\u2019d been trusting his\npromise and grumbled that the years were slipping by. \u201cWe\u2019re running out of\ntime,\u201d I said. \u201cDo you know how old I\u2019ll be next birthday?\u201d He said, \u201cAs a\nmatter of fact, I know exactly how old you are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knows how to silence my whining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re wondering\u2026did he ever come through? Yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later in Hebrews 11, Moses shows up. We learn that in\ndifficult circumstances, \u201che persevered because he saw him who is invisible\u201d\n(v. 27).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember my hard-learned truth: focus determines rest. Moses\npersevered because he saw him who is invisible. Focus! He kept going forward,\nresting on the promise of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s where I find rest\u2014the promises of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let me repeat: when God makes a promise, it\u2019s a done deal. I can rest, assured it will happen, even if I don\u2019t live to see it. Friend, are you waiting? Don\u2019t despair! Be encouraged by\npeople who knew how to rest. Moses on the journey with God\u2019s people to the land\nof promise. Joseph in prison. Daniel in the lion\u2019s den. Shadrach, Meshach, an\nAbednego in the furnace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hebrews 11 ends with a long list of people who held on to\nfaith in uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m learning\u2026but my name doesn\u2019t qualify for a spot next to\nAbraham. Remember that he waited twenty-five years for God to fulfill his\npromise of a son. But he came through. Then God asked him to sacrifice that son\non an altar! Abraham prepared to do the unthinkable. How could he? You\u2019ve read\nthis, haven\u2019t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a\nsacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and\nonly son, even though God had said to him, \u2018It is through Isaac that your\noffspring will be reckoned.\u2019 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead,\nand figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death\u201d (Hebrews\n11:17-19).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God intervened and provided a ram for the sacrifice. Abraham\u2019s willingness to obey declared his devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my journalism career, I interviewed many celebrities.\nAbraham lived long before my time, but if I\u2019d had the opportunity to interview\nhim, one question would have satisfied my curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were certain if you obeyed God and he let you go\nthrough with the sacrifice of your son, that he could raise Isaac from the dead\nto fulfill his promise to make you the father of a great nation. How did you\ndevelop such a faith?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t know how he would answer, but this might come close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen God called me on mission, I made a decision to follow\nhim. The longer we walked together, the more I grew to trust him. My faith\nenlarged in circumstances where I saw no purpose and had nothing to go on but\nthe sheer word of God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Been there, done that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Circumstances need not disturb our rest. Indeed, they are\nthe rich soil in which faith grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast,\nbecause he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is\nthe Rock eternal\u201d (Isaiah 26:3-4).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep your gaze on him who is invisible! Keep living in\nfaith!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
