Need Fulfillment? Expect a Package Soon

“This is the Fulfillment Department,” said a stranger’s voice. He had a package ready to send. The best telemarketing call ever!

Wish I hadn’t clicked to end the conversation. Sometimes my hands are faster than my brain. I rarely waste time listening to telephone sales tactics, but later I wondered what else he might have said.

Could you use a little fulfillment? Wouldn’t it be exhilarating to place an order and find a huge package of “fulfillment” at our front door!

Fulfillment is the goal of our life dreams.

What exactly is that? How do we measure it?

Thesaurus explains: achievement, accomplishment, satisfaction, contentment, success, happiness, gratification.

Feeling we’ve failed to find fulfillment leads to disillusionment and despair. Drudgery robs our joy and motivation, leaving us listless…despondent.

Yet some tasks and responsibilities are just plain unfulfilling. Necessary but unfulfilling. I’ve spent time in such places, doing what needed to be done but finding little fulfillment or joy in it.

Wading through those swampy waters, I made a decision that turned my fulfillment expectations around: see the mundane as a God-assignment.

What happened next reminded me of David’s experience.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust…” (Psalm 40:1-4a NIV).

He set my feet on firm ground and put a song of praise in my heart to encourage others struggling in the pit!

My goal in swampy waters is to follow God with my whole heart so that later I will look back on this temporary trudge with no regret.

Friend, are you in swampy waters? Maybe you’re in a full-blown flood. Wherever you are, the Lord is there.

…“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…” (Isaiah 43:1-3).

So even in the torrent we can rest.

Because Sovereign God has designed our circumstances and has a purpose in them. He’s in charge of the “Fulfillment Department.”

And after you complete that God-assignment, look out your front door!
